The Balance of Effort and Ease: An Ashtanga Retreat with Katy Scherer

Join authorised Ashtanga teacher Katy Scherer and Ashtanga therapy teacher Leni Scherer for a week of dedicated practice at Yoga in Salento, one of Europe’s most loved retreat centres.

Nestled in the heart of southern Italy’s Salento peninsula, this peaceful haven is surrounded by olive groves and the timeless beauty of the Puglian countryside, just a short drive from the turquoise waters of the Adriatic and Ionian seas.

This retreat offers an immersion into the essence of Ashtanga yoga: focused effort paired with the art of surrender. Each morning begins with Mysore-style practice, guided breathwork and meditation, while selected afternoons open into workshops exploring technique, philosophy, and mindful tools (including preventative/therapeutic sequences) for practice. Together we’ll explore how yoga can be both disciplined and liberating — cultivating strength and steadiness in body, with lightness and ease in mind.

Between sessions, enjoy wholesome vegetarian meals, rest in the tranquil gardens, or take time to explore the charming towns and coastline of Salento. All levels are welcome — whether you’re stepping into Mysore practice for the first time or deepening a long-term relationship with Ashtanga, this retreat invites you to find balance on the mat and in life.

About Katy Scherer

Katy is an Authorised Ashtanga and Breathwork teacher based in Bonn, Germany. She is the co-founder and owner of The Vinyasa People Yoga Studio and Yin Nation a yoga and lifestyle store.

I love to blur the lines between tradition and modernity and find it fascinating, scary, provocative and transformational! An Ashtangi at heart I find comfort and support within the traditions of the practice, completing 5 months of study in Mysore under Sharath Jois and gaining his blessing to teach in 2022 where I received my authorization.

When it comes to breathwork and pranayama it's a different story. After years of traditional practice, I shook things up and dove head first into the world of breathwork where I experienced the life altering power of breath!

Blending tradition, modern science and dynamic breathwork practices I offer a space for all students to go all in, go deep all whilst being supported on their breathwork journey.

I whole heartedly believe there is beauty in combining tradition with modernity to create a practice that serves you so you can serve others. As a dedicated practitioner, teacher, business owner, mama and wife I understands the true meaning of flexibility and likes to share the lessons I has learnt to all willing to try.

Over the years as a teacher I completed my first RYT 200 Hour training with Seasonal Yoga in Glasgow and then my RYT 300 with Tribe in Austria. I later went on to do a second RYT 200, The Ashtanga Intensive with the Miami Life Center and my 500 Hour Pranayama and breath work teacher training with Pranayama Sadhana in beautiful Bali.

I have also completed the Breath Mastery course with Dan Bruhle, the Oxygen Advantage course with Patrick Mckeown and Pranayama level 1 teacher training Eddie Stern and team.

About Leni Scherer

Even at a young age, I was fascinated by the fields of human physiology and philosophy, as well as by the question of how different aspects of these two fields mirror each other from a spiritual perspective.

During my medical studies, I more or less stumbled into an Ashtanga Mysore-style class. I was so captivated by the techniques used there that I devoted myself to the practice of Ashtanga Yoga and to the self-study of yoga philosophy and Ayurveda.

On my yoga path, I have had the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by various teachers, among them Dr. Ronald Steiner, Richard Freeman, Mary Taylor, Tim Feldmann, Kino MacGregor, Sharat Jois, Eddie Stern, David Williams, and Nancy Gilgoff.

I am a physician specialized in Integrative Medicine, an AYI Expert teacher, a Mindfulness Meditation teacher, and a Yoga Alliance–accredited 500-hour yoga teacher trainer. Since 2016, I have been working as a yoga instructor and as a lecturer in yoga teacher training programs. I have taught with Dr. Ronald Steiner, Richard Freeman and Marz Taylor on several occasions.

I am a dedicated practitioner who combines knowledge of yoga philosophy and human physiology with personal, practical experience, and I strive to skillfully place it all within a spiritual context.

I am grateful to share everything I have been able to learn so far with anyone interested in continually rediscovering and deepening their own practice.
